In 1880, while May was still an infant, her family joined the Mormon Church. Two years later her father James had sailed to America to prepare the way for taking his family to Utah. His family immigrated to Utah in 1884 and landed in San Francisco. They traveled by train from San Francisco to Salt Lake City, and then to American Fork.
